Read the Management Board’s report here and learn about ASL BiSL Foundation’s milestones in 2016. The main goal of our Foundation is to act as caretaker for the ASL and BiSL frameworks, and to ensure that distribution as well as further development of our Intellectual Property is stimulated. A major milestone has been reached this year, as the BiSL Next development project produced its main product, with the input from many end user organizations as well as our ambassadors and experts in the field of Business Information Management. The book was launched in January 2017, at the ‘Digging Digital’ conference in The Netherlands.

Internationalization

European Commission has referenced ASL in its ‘European IT Professionalism Framework’, a  foundational body of knowledge (fBOK) and competence framework for IT Professionals. The ultimate goal is to foster the competences and the mobility of IT professionals in Europe. The ASL BiSL Foundation has also actively contributed to application of the framework by comparing it with ASL and BiSL and proposing new content based on BiSL and the ISO standard for application management, ISO 16350.

For the ISO 16350, a first candidate for an assessment and certification has expressed its interest: an ICT service provider in the Netherlands. Unfortunately, no official assessment is available yet. The ASL BiSL Foundation will stimulate auditors to add ISO 16350 to their audit portfolio.

Agility is still one of the hottest topics this year, and we’ve contributed to successful webinars and round tables on this topic. Cooperation with international knowledge networks IIBA and BRMI has resulted in webinars and successful theme sessions about the mutual added value of BiSL and Business Analysis, and BiSL and Business Relationship Management.

We have also participated in the IT4IT Forum, giving input on the relation between IT Operating Models and BiSL.

Our local ‘ambassadors’ from Germany, Poland and Russia have provided input for BiSL Next.

To further stimulate the international awareness of ASL and BiSL, we have performed a comprehensive international promotion tour with presentations in Austria, Australia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Japan New Zealand, Norway, Sweden and UK.

Knowledge network in Netherlands

Our knowledge community in the Netherlands consists of 50 experts from 25 different organizations, varying from large end user organizations and international IT companies to independent IT consultants and trainers. These experts contribute to publications in the form of books, white papers and articles, and to the events like theme sessions, round tables and conferences.

White Papers on the alignment of ASL, BiSL and other standards and frameworks have been downloaded more than 40,000 times from our website.

Our theme sessions and round tables, on topics like ‘Enterprise DevOps’, ‘Sourcing and Sizing in the Business Information Management domain’ and ‘Supplier Management and Contract Management’ were well attended and well appreciated by the participants.

This year, several members who have been contributing for many years, have ended their membership. At the same time, the new diversified membership packages still attract new members, like the new Bronze member, Business Benefit Solutions.

In the universities of applied sciences in the Netherlands, ASL and BiSL are still popular and they are now part of the curriculum at more than 15 universities.

Content development

Based on the requirements for a new version of BiSL as defined by the board of the Foundation, an authoring team led by Brian Johnson has developed and delivered a new model and book on business information management: BiSL Next. This framework provides a better fit with the Agile ways of working that are familiar in almost every modern enterprise . Also, it addresses topics like Data, Governance and Risk, while focusing on Need & Value from a business perspective. With this new and very contemporary framework, we expect to grow the (international) interest for BiSL and business information management over the next few years.

Additionally, two new titles of the BiSL Scenario books have been published, covering the topics ‘Demand Management’ and ‘Information Policy’

Boards

The Supervisory Board of the ASL BiSL Foundation is strengthened with two new members: Pieter Frijns and Frans Haverkamp. With Hans Nieuwenhuis as chairman, the Supervisory Board now has a solid basis on which the Foundation can continue to grow.

Representatives of the Gold Members ABN AMRO and Urenco are participating in the Program Board, that is responsible for planning and monitoring activities of the working groups.

Results and activities by third parties

A higher level qualification for BiSL, the ‘BiSL Advanced Qualification’, has been launched, together with APMG. The first candidates have passed their exam this year. We expect the number of candidates for this advanced level of qualification to grow in the next few years, as more companies will adopt the frameworks and people will be looking to develop their knowledge and skills accordingly.

For the first time since APMG started providing the ASL and BiSL Foundation exams, the number of exams has decreased. For ASL exams, there was a decrease of 17%, while for the classical BiSL exams the decrease has been 24%. We expect this number to grow again soon, now that BiSL Next has been officially launched.

As a result of our cooperation with APMG, no less than 44 training organizations are now accredited globally to deliver ASL and BiSL education and exams.

Outlook

As a result of the development of the BiSL Next, the reserves of the Foundation have now been depleted. For 2017 no further allocation of strategic reserves is being made, and our strategy is aimed at renewing income streams using the new publication to boost memberships and royalties. The budget for cost in 2017 has been further reduced to compensate for anticipated initial revenue loss before our new products penetrate the market. In 2017 we will also explore strategic options for the Foundation to ensure continuity as well as ways to leverage on our newly developed product.
